Marathon postponed again

SWARTZ CREEK — No motion was made at the city council meeting Monday as applicants anxiously anticipated council’s decision regarding who would develop the vacant Marathon gas station.

Council was split on delaying the decision. Half were ready to decide while the other half felt the need to address Zoning Administrator Adam Zettle and Traffic Engineer Pete LaMourie directly as council felt LaMourie’s report was vague. Neither was able to attend Monday’s meeting.

The factors deterring a decision are traffic, ingress, egress and optimal use of a prime location. Councilman Michael Shumaker recalled intersection improvements made and a traffic impact study performed at the time of the Kroger construction.

“I do believe that intersection will have a lot more traffic in the years, though this won’t bring a lot more traffic there,” he said about the current project. He said whether it is this project or another, traffic will increase and the intersection improvements were made to handle it. “There’s enough to handle this project, there’s enough to handle a project across the road, and probably 3 or 4 more on the diagonal corner. So I’m not sure if this traffic issue is such a big thing.”

Councilman Curtis Porath felt differently.

“I do have a problem with the intersection. I believe the ingress and egress is going to be a problem, not only starting now, but it’s only going to get worse. So I don’t have a problem wait- ing a couple weeks to get Mr. LaMourie. I didn’t like his report. I thought it was very vague and I think we deserve some better answers to make that decision, said Porath. “That’s going to be an important intersection for years to come, for the next 15 -25 years, and I think we better do it right the first time.”

“The safe way out of this is for office use, however, is it the best use for that corner based on what’s there?” asked City Manager Paul Bueche. “It is the gateway to the city.”

A special meeting has been scheduled to “have experts present” on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m.
