Huffman works across many mediums, including painting in acrylic and watercolor as well as some sculpture and metalsmithing. She will be exhibiting 23 pieces of work at the gallery, which will be mostly acrylics and watercolors, but will also include one oil painting, one photograph, one charcoal drawing and several prints.

The work is all framed and range in price between $20 and $75.

Huffman’s favorite subject matter is pet animals, including birds and dogs.

“I like to do pets, whatever they are,” she said.

Her bird paintings have included various kinds of birds, including pheasants, blue jays, cardinals and mallards.

“I’ve always loved birds and dogs,” Huffman said.

She has also painted horses.

“I think horses are extremely difficult,” Huffman said. “There are a lot of contours that have to be just perfect.”

Huffman said people will give her photographs of their pets, and she will paint them.

“They make unique presents,” she said.

Huffman began painting in 1983 and studied art at Mott Community College from 1985-1986, which included drawing, painting and general art instruction classes.

“You had to do drawing first before you progressed to painting classes,” Huffman said.

Huffman said she tries to paint at least two hours each day.

“Some days I get more done than others,” she said.

Huffman said painting is good therapy for her.

“It’s really relaxing and distracts you from whatever is bothering you,” she said.

Huffman moved to Clayton Township in 1968 and has been married for 56 years. She has four children, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The Swartz Creek Area Art Guild and Gallery is located at 8048 Miller Road, Suite G, in Swartz Creek. For the rest of the week, the exhibit hours to see or purchase Huffman’s artwork will be Thursday from noon until 5 p.m., Friday from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday from noon until 4 p.m.
